Pelvic inflammatory disease
December 19, 2011
Acute pelvic inflammatory disease is highly unlikely when recent intercourse has not taken place or an IUD is not being used. Pelvic inflammatory disease (or disorder) (PID) is a generic term for inflammation of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and/or ovaries as it progresses to scar formation with adhesions to nearby tissues and organs. This may lead to infections.
Adult women with PID are either closely monitored or admitted to the hospital. More aggressive treatment may take place in the hospital for adolescent females, who are at a much higher risk of not following treatment plans and of having complications.
The definitive diagnosis of the woman’s abdominal/pelvic pain is unclear.
